CAMERA BUYING
RTSP cameras: how to choose a local viewing candidate
On this page
Choose an RTSP camera by exact model, selected stream codec, power and camera account. These documented candidates still need CameraViewer hardware tests.

Start with a reachable live stream
An RTSP camera sends a video stream to a client using a camera address, port and account. An open stream gives you a route to investigate with another viewer. It does not establish that every feature of the manufacturer's app travels with the video.
Start your shortlist with the exact camera, its power source and the codec of the stream you intend to open. A codec is the video format, such as H.264. A family name or an ONVIF logo leaves those questions unanswered. Our RTSP setup guide explains the fields of the address.
Documented candidates to check
The inspected US specifications list RTSP and H.264 for the Tapo C120, C210 and C225. Their network route is Wi-Fi. Follow the source links on each model page and match the hardware offered by the seller.
For a wired installation, the Reolink RLC-520A is a PoE candidate. Its inspected US specification lists H.264, while other revisions need their own codec check. The Reolink support matrix separates direct-camera access from models needing a Hub or recorder.
Check the account and the selected stream
Use the camera's documented account process. Account details for a manufacturer's cloud app may differ from the account accepted by a direct stream. Record how to create that account before deciding the camera fits your plan.
Check whether the camera exposes the stream at the resolution you want. A codec listed somewhere in the specification does not prove every full-resolution or lower-resolution stream uses it. Keep a note of the chosen codec and the stream path; it makes a later connection test repeatable.
Make the purchase decision separately from the app test
Choose around placement, power and documented access. Then confirm the seller's exact model, region, hardware revision, return terms and any required power or storage accessories. We have no verified merchant offers or current prices on this page.
CameraViewer hardware playback remains untested. A camera meeting the documented shortlist conditions is a candidate for a test, with no promise of app playback, motor control, audio or recording access. Use compatibility evidence to understand that boundary.
For the next decision, compare local storage and live streams, or use the indoor camera guide to narrow the placement.
