Tapo RTSP setup: camera accounts and stream URLs

On this page

Create a Tapo camera account and check the documented RTSP path for your model. CameraViewer physical-camera playback remains unverified.

Check model and power requirements first

TP-Link's RTSP instructions generally exclude C425, C460, C660, C645D and D230. D235, D225 and TD25 require hardwired power, a jumper and always-on mode. Confirm your exact model before searching for a missing setting.

Record the hardware revision alongside the model name. A matching brand name alone gives you too little information to diagnose a stream. Our compatibility notes separate published camera instructions from CameraViewer tests.

Create the account for camera access

In Tapo, open Device Settings > Advanced Settings > Camera Account. Create separate credentials. Port 554 serves /stream1 for higher quality and /stream2 for standard quality:

rtsp://CAMERA_IP:554/stream1
rtsp://CAMERA_IP:554/stream2

Dual-lens telephoto paths are /stream6 and /stream7. The manufacturer instructions also describe ONVIF's wide-angle-only access and restrictions on three simultaneous storage methods.

Copy the camera address carefully, then keep an uncredentialed version of the URL in your setup notes. Enter your camera-account credentials privately. If you later share the address for help, remove the username and password first. The RTSP setup guide explains where credentials, ports and paths belong.

For dual-lens cameras, TP-Link's RTSP instructions assign /stream1 and /stream2 to the wide-angle lens. Telephoto uses /stream6 for high quality or /stream7 for standard quality. ONVIF exposes only the wide-angle lens. These documented routes do not verify either lens in CameraViewer.

Inspect the actual video format

Codec details vary between products. The Tapo C310 EU V1 datasheet lists H.264 video compression. The C260 V1 datasheet lists H.264/H.265. These specifications do not tell us which codec every RTSP path supplies under every setting.

When preparing a CameraViewer connection, record the codec selected for the stream you plan to open. CameraViewer currently has evidence for decoded H.264 test video and manual RTSP entry. Physical Tapo camera playback remains unverified. A datasheet's codec list cannot establish an app test result.

Keep the first connection attempt small

Start with one camera and one URL. If it fails, keep the original address in your notes and change one field per attempt. This makes the outcome useful: changing the address, credentials and stream together leaves you unsure which change mattered.

Separate three questions. Can the phone reach the address? Does the camera accept the account? Does the selected video stream play? A failed answer to one question does not establish an answer to the others. Use the connection troubleshooting guide to record the symptom and the next check.

If another client can open a stream, record its exact URL and stream settings. That is a useful comparison for diagnosis, while CameraViewer playback still needs its own validation. For protocol discovery and account differences, continue with the ONVIF camera setup guide.

For indoor hardware choices, compare Tapo C210 and C225. The indoor local-viewing guide connects placement and power checks to those model notes.

Common questions

Is every Tapo stream H.264?

No brand-wide codec rule is established here. The C310 EU V1 datasheet lists H.264; the C260 V1 datasheet lists H.264/H.265. Check the actual stream.
