Reolink RTSP setup: ports, streams and model limits
On this page
Check your Reolink model's protocol support, switch on RTSP at the camera or recorder, and use that device's IP address and credentials. Reolink documents /Preview_01_main and /Preview_01_sub for standalone cameras. Physical-camera playback in CameraViewer remains unverified.

Check the camera and the device serving its stream
Start with the exact model and how it connects. Reolink's protocol support matrix lists battery Wi-Fi cameras as requiring a Home Hub, and no-UID kit cameras as requiring an NVR. Its Battery Video Doorbell 2nd Gen has a standalone exception in Wired Power Mode. It also distinguishes E1/E320/E321, which need a Hub or NVR, from standalone-capable E1 Pro/E330. Listed 4G cameras have restrictions; TrackMix Wired LTE needs Ethernet.
These are manufacturer-documented conditions. The compatibility notes explain what remains untested in CameraViewer. Write down whether you will address a camera, Hub or NVR before changing settings.
Switch on the right service
Reolink's port settings instructions show Advanced Network Settings > Server Settings in its app, and Device Settings > Network > Advanced > Server Settings in its desktop client. Some models have RTSP switched off initially. Turn it on and record the configured port.
For a recorder or Hub connection, open the ports on that device. Switching on a camera's service does not configure the recorder endpoint you intend to use. RTSP and ONVIF have separate controls; consult the ONVIF setup guide if that is your task.
Build the URL around the addressed device
The following are placeholder addresses, with credentials entered separately:
rtsp://CAMERA_IP:554/Preview_01_main
rtsp://CAMERA_IP:554/Preview_01_sub
Replace CAMERA_IP and 554 with your device address and configured RTSP port. Reolink's RTSP reference uses 01 for a standalone camera. For NVR channel two, it shows Preview_02_main and Preview_02_sub, with the NVR's credentials. Its Home Hub instructions likewise use Hub credentials and the appropriate channel.
The same RTSP reference says Home Hub API channel values start at zero; add one for the RTSP channel number. Battery Wi-Fi cameras through a Home Hub or NVR have preview sessions of up to five minutes, then sleep and disconnect. Request the stream again to continue. Older NVR hardware H3MB16, H3MB02 and H3MB17 restrict connected 4K cameras to fluent-mode RTSP. These conditions need separate app tests.
The password explanation separates device passwords from cloud-account and app-lock passwords. Keep passwords out of screenshots and support messages. The RTSP address guide explains each URL field.
Choose the codec before testing playback
Reolink's codec article describes 8MP main streams as H.265 and substreams as H.264; its 2MP, 4MP and 5MP guidance describes H.264, with some configurable models. Check your model's current stream settings rather than applying that description to every camera.
The owner-supplied brief reports manual RTSP entry and decoded H.264 test media; this website has not independently tested that behavior. This guide records a setup candidate, with physical-camera playback still awaiting validation.
Diagnose one field at a time
If there is no connection, confirm the endpoint's current address and RTSP switch first. If authentication fails, revisit the credentials for that endpoint. If the wrong scene appears, check the recorder channel. If a connection opens without video, inspect the selected stream's codec before repeatedly changing the password.
Record each change and result. The connection troubleshooting guide helps separate address, authentication and video failures without losing the settings you started with.
For a wired installation, the RLC-520A model notes collect power and revision checks. The outdoor PoE guide helps plan the cable run before choosing equipment.
Common questions
Can a Reolink battery camera supply RTSP directly?
Reolink's support matrix lists Home Hub requirements for battery Wi-Fi cameras. Check the exact model and power mode before choosing an address.
Which password goes with an NVR stream?
Reolink's RTSP instructions use the NVR's credentials when the URL addresses the NVR. A Reolink cloud-account password is a separate credential.
